Across the High-Tech sector in Malaysia and Singapore, i.e. semiconductors & electronics, biotech, automation & robotics, automobiles/ EV in particular; internships consistently favor students from engineering and science-based disciplines, because the work involves physical systems, technical processes, or scientific knowledge. Electrical and electronic engineering dominate in semiconductors, life sciences are essential for biotech, and mechatronics or mechanical engineering are central to automation and automotive roles. However, the depth of expectation differs between the two countries.

There is also a growing demand for students with interdisciplinary and data-oriented backgrounds, particularly in areas where technology overlaps with software and analytics. Computer science, data science, and related fields are increasingly relevant in automation, robotics, and even biotech through areas like bioinformatics and system optimization. Overall, high-tech firms tend to favor students whose courses equip them with strong analytical thinking, technical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with both physical systems and digital tools, with expectations being more applied in Malaysia and more specialized and advanced in Singapore.

In Malaysia, internships are generally application-driven, meaning students are expected to learn on the job while contributing to operations, manufacturing, or implementation tasks. In Singapore, the same sectors are positioned higher up the value chain, so internships are more specialized and technically demanding, often requiring prior knowledge, project experience, or research exposure. This reflects a broader difference: Malaysia emphasizes execution and production, while Singapore emphasizes design, optimization, and innovation focus on as high-tech sector.
